After drafting quietly this year, I am excited to announce my new book Still Human: A Christian Vision for the Age of AI and reveal the cover. A number of supporters participated in a cover poll to help discern what would communicate the purpose of the book best.
A heartfelt thank you to all who weighed in.
Here it is.
The scanner and the thumbprint represent the tension between two very different things: the machine and the human. This is the intersection of the two. The machine is new. The human is ancient. The machine can serve the human or the human can serve the machine.
A machine can recognize that you are human, but can’t tell you who you are.
The thumbprint is terra cotta, which means baked earth. This embodies the idea that humans were formed from the earth (Genesis 2:7). The argument of the book does not rest on what the machines say about who we are. It rests on the ancient truths of Scripture where we discover our true identity, worth, and calling.
The brackets are clean. The thumbprint is messy. There is beauty in this story. We just have to know where to begin.
There are many good books coming out about what AI is, how it is shaping us, what the risks and rewards are, and how we implement it. These deserve a read.
I want to take a different approach. An older one.
I don’t think AI created the identity crisis many feel today. Long have humans struggled with understanding their true identity and purpose. This has occupied my mind, my research, and my writings for years. AI exposes it in a deeper, more pervasive way.
I use AI every single day. It’s great. But if we don’t know who we are as humans and where AI fits, we are in for a world of hurt. Fear. Anxiety. Apathy.
Understanding what it means to be genuinely human is the most pressing issue of our day. And, so, I have endeavored to offer this book as my contribution.
I start not with the technology but with Scripture, asking what it means to be human, made in the Image of God. Only in light of that foundation do I return to where AI fits. Because no technology should dictate who we are.
I ask three questions: “Who did God create humans to be? Where does our worth come from? What is our calling?” I address the source of the crisis that is cracking the foundation, rebuild a stable, biblical base, and then explore a life constructed on that. The question is no longer “How do we use AI?” It becomes “As we live faithfully, where does AI belong?”
If you forgot what makes you human, AI is the end. If you remember, it is the beginning.
A few words remain to be written. Even more need to be cut. But the book is shifting into its final form.
Over the coming weeks I will complete the writing and editing process. Then I will move into typesetting, printing, proofing, and final steps to get to launch in December.
Nowadays a lot can happen in weeks. As the saying goes, “There are decades where nothing happens; and there are weeks where decades happen.” Even as I write about truths that are thousands of years old, it is daunting to consider how they apply when a decade of progress could take place between now and when the book arrives at your doorstep. That is why I began with what is old. Whatever features ship or innovations take place between now and December, who you are will not have changed.
Please pray for wisdom and discernment as I try to bring this to completion.
I hope and pray that this book is a gift that orients, guides, and strengthens you for the calling God has given you.
